Music is the key to relaxing the mind and body. During my Harp sessions I will play varied styles and kinds of music depending on the situation. If the session is for an individual, I start by assessing the client and the surroundings in order to get a feel for what is needed immediately. I start with soothing harp sounds, and using breath space and silence as necessary. There are times that familiar music is called for, there are times when playing a steady rhythm for a long period of time is needed, there are times when soothing non-familiar music is important.. The speed of the music is critical to the situation at hand as well. Playing too fast can be an irritating feeling, so I watch for physical signs of discomfort at all times. Many times clients and or family members have asked for songs to be repeated. Skill at observation is a key element in healthcare music in a clinical situation. Songs, tempo, volume, rhythm, familiarity of music are all important and each can be changed in an instant. This is the beauty of live music.
In a group setting, I keep my eyes on the group, I watch for any signs of discomfort, or depending on why I am there, I will try to connect with the person that looks like they need special music attention. If I am there as part of a daily activity, I will play very familiar songs that they might want to sing, clap or dance to. If it is right after lunch during the rest time, I slow the music down to allow the heartbeat to slow for rest.
Playing in memory care or for dementia clients is a very special skill, there are times that the client is very engaged with the music, and wants to sing along, that is perfectly fine, I make sure to play for them they way they need to receive the music.
